Admission Arrangements

All places at Harlow Green Community Primary School are allocated in accordance with the Local Authority (LA) admissions policy. This is published annually in the Gateshead LA Information for Parents Booklet, which is made available to parents prior to admission.

All information and the online application process can be found by clicking here.  The page includes:

  • School admission arrangements for specific academic years
  • Arrangements for children outside their normal age group and summer born children
  • In-year admission arrangements

As part of the induction process, parental meetings are held during the summer term for pupils about to enrol for Nursery and for Reception classes.

During the autumn term, nursery pupils have a preliminary visit. This is followed by attendance on a short session time that is extended to full time over the following weeks. Depending on the availability of places, children who attain the age of three years during the year are admitted at termly intervals following their third birthday.

What is the transition process like when a child starts Reception at Harlow Green?

In September Reception children attend for half days, either mornings or afternoons, for one week with the Friday being a full day.  This process allows children to get used to the routines as well as providing assessment time for the staff.

From the second week, all children attend full time, from 9.00am until 3.20pm.

There may be times when alternative transition is required to meet the needs of the children.  This could involve a longer period of transition or shorter hours.  Any alternative arrangements will be planned well in advance with the Reception Lead and the school SENDCo working alongside parents/carers.

What would an in-year admission look like?

There can be various reasons for a child to move in-year within any Year Group, but often this is because a family moves into a new area.   There can be times when parents/carers, along with their children feel that a new school is necessary, even if they already attend a local school.  Before a move is considered, Head Teachers will always encourage families to work with their current school as far as possible to overcome any issues there may be.

When a move is being considered, parents/carers should make an appointment withe the Head Teacher in order to meet, discuss the potential transfer, talk about the expectations at Harlow Green, and have a look around school.  At this point, any specific concerns or issues can be raised which could effect how an application may be handled by the council.

If families decide to make a formal application, an in-year transfer form will need to be completed.  All information regarding this can be found by clicking here.

Where an application is agreed, a start date will be selected for as soon as possible.  At this point, Office Staff will work with parents/carers on the likes of uniform and communication apps.
