Nursery Provision

At Harlow Green, we believe that children should have a quality foundation to provide the best support for starting school.  An essential aspect of this is having nursery provision which gives opportunities for children to learn and develop their knowledge, skills and understanding through high-quality teaching.

As an educational-based setting, our qualified teacher and teaching assistants work within a wider team to implement the Early Years curriculum in a way in which children can explore through play but also receive direct adult support.

How are nursery sessions organised?

15 hours Provision

Families are offered 15 hours educational places in our nursery.  This will be 5 sessions a week with each session lasting 3 hours.  Children will be allocated either mornings or afternoons.

Our educational provision is based on children attending every day, Monday to Friday.  Our planning will support children to build knowledge and skills progressively over the week, week-on-week.  Regular attendance is also essential to provide consistency for children learning how school routines, new boundaries and expectations.

30 hours Provision

We are now providing a number of 30-hour places at Harlow Green.  These places require children to access Monday to Friday, for full days.

If you would like further information about our offer, please feel free to contact us on:

0191 487 6703 or

harlowgreenprimaryschool@gateshead.gov.uk

We also work with other establishments such as childminders and nurseries where children access between settings for their 30-hour entitlement.  Although the offers between establishments are different, as partners, we work together for the best interests of the children and their families.

It is important to note that here at Harlow Green our nursery is led by an experienced qualified teacher (this is not a requirement for private nursery settings) as well as an Early Years Leader (also a teacher) both who understand education within the Early Years setting and the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2.  This enables developments in education to be implemented within the setting in order to get the highest quality provision possible.  Additionally, as our nursery is part of a large primary school, it benefits in many others ways such as resourcing, staffing and the wider learning environment.

Childcare Overview

Children can start nursery the day after their 3rd birthday although this will be scheduled to mee the needs of the child and school.

We do not have provision for 2-year-olds.

What are the times of the nursery sessions?

Nursery sessions are as follows:

Morning:                        8.45am – 11.45am

Afternoon Session:      12.30pm – 3.30pm

We are now providing a number of 30-hour places at Harlow Green.  These places require children to access Monday to Friday, for full days.

What is the staffing organisation in nursery?

Early Years staffing is the most important resource for our children.  The official ratio in our nursery should be 1:13 (a qualified teacher and a Teaching Assistant at L3 or above).  At our school we have always reduced the ratio by having a third member of staff as we have appointed apprentices which has supported our provision whilst providing opportunities for young adults to train and become employed with us or other schools/nurseries.

From September, with Miss Nelson on maternity leave, the Nursery staff will be:

Miss Saxby - Nursery Teacher

Miss Harrison - Nursery Teaching Assistant

Nursery Tour

The video below will help children see what the learning environment is like in nursery.  We know that some of our children will be returners, but it has been a long time away from us and a little reminder will be useful!

Please contact the office if you would like to enquire about accessing a nursery place for your child.
