Special Educational Needs & Disabilities
Harlow Green Community Primary School is a maintained mainstream school for students from the ages of 3 to 11. The governing body and staff aim for all children to be included regardless of whether they have special educational needs or not. We will provide equal opportunities for all children which will allow them to experience success and achievement and to reach their full potential. We are an inclusive school and strive to support all children to enable them to make the best possible progress in order that they to thrive personally and academically.
To accomplish these aims we offer a broad and balanced curriculum with high-quality teaching. We cater for students with additional support within school if the child has an identified Special Educational Need and/or Disability. The term Special Educational Need and Disability (SEND) describes the needs of children who have a difficulty or disability which makes learning harder for them than other children of the same age.
Our aim to provide effective support for children with special educational needs and disabilities, starts from our first contact with parents and carers as soon as needs are being considered. We make sure that additional needs are identified early and we offer a range of provision according to identified needs. We work with a range of other professionals (e.g. Local Authority, Health) to make sure that any child receives the support they require to thrive at school and at home.
The Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENDCo) is Mrs L Softley who can be contacted via the school office.

How are needs identified as being at a level that requires additional support?
To support different agencies and families to work together and have a consistent identification of children’s needs, Gateshead has developed a ‘Thresholds’ document. This document categorises needs and provides descriptors to be considered at varying levels. Using this document means that all involved can have an agreed understanding of children’s needs and at what level that these can be met appropriately.

How is the school supported by specialist services?
The provision we develop as an individual maintained school sits within a wider strategy of support within Gateshead Council. Within the Council, there are a variety of specialist teams and services which work collectively to support schools through advice, guidance and direct work with children and their families.
